Back to school? We’ll be there!

By Tara Beecher M.Pharm (1.5 mins read time )

After a long break over the summer holidays, it can be stressful getting back into the routine of school. Preparation can be extensive with supplies, uniforms and numerous other items needed. At Good Price Pharmacy Warehouse, we’ll be there to help make the start of a new school year a healthy one.

Your back to school checklist:

Tip 1: Check expiry dates of medicines in your medicine cabinet. Bring any out-of-date medicines to your pharmacy for disposal and make a list of those that need replacing.  The beginning of a new school year can mean an increase in illnesses coming home. To be prepared, make sure you have the essentials like paracetamol, ibuprofen, electrolyte replacements etc.

Tip 2: If your child requires medication during school, check your school policies. They may require you to have a letter from your child’s doctor, have actions plans in place or require additional labelling. Some children have confidence in managing their own medication, such as inhalers. Ensure that you discuss self-management with your school.

Tip 3: If your child has health conditions, such as allergies, asthma or diabetes, it is good to have an action plan in place. The beginning of a new school year is a great time to review and update action plans if needed. Make sure your school has a copy of the current action plan. It is also a great idea to encourage your child to know their triggers, signs and symptoms and when they need to seek help.

Tip 4: Get prepared for school lunches again. Making a healthy lunch box can be stressful. However, creating healthy eating habits at a young age can help to reduce the likelihood of developing chronic health conditions later in life. Here are some healthy lunch inspiration ideas for the new school year!

Our pharmacists can help by:

  • providing advice on common children’s health issues
  • updating action plans
  • labelling medicines for schools or daycare
