Travel Health Services

Planning some overseas travel?

Pharmacists can provide you with travel health advice, vaccination services, and essential supplies to make your trip as safe and enjoyable as possible.

Travel vaccinations

Travelling can expose you to different health risks. Data shows that up to 50 per cent of travellers experience a travel-related illness, often from contaminated food and water.

Your community pharmacist can advise, supply and administer routine and recommended vaccinations based on your itinerary and destination. The range of vaccinations that pharmacists can supply and administer differs in each Australian jurisdiction. For further information please visit our vaccination services page or speak with one of our pharmacists.

It’s important to plan ahead to get the vaccinations you need and allow time for them to take effect. You should book an appointment 6 to 12 weeks before you travel.

Malaria prevention

If you are travelling to areas where malaria is a risk, prevention is important. Malaria is a serious and sometimes life-threatening disease.

Avoiding mosquito bites is the best form of malaria prevention, so carrying effective insect repellents is very important.

For certain locations and activities, it may be appropriate to take medication to reduce the likelihood of contracting malaria.

In Queensland, prescribing pharmacists can assess your risk, make recommendations and where appropriate, prescribe medication for malaria prevention.

Travellers’ diarrhoea

The risk of travellers’ diarrhoea is higher in locations where clean water and food hygiene cannot be guaranteed. Your risks can be reduced by taking certain precautions such as eating freshly cooked foods served steaming hot and fruit that can be peeled, drinking beverages that are bottled, canned or recently boiled, avoiding raw or undercooked food (particularly meat or seafood), fresh salads, peeled fruit, unpasteurised milk or milk products, unboiled water, and ice.

For most travellers, early treatment of travellers’ diarrhoea is recommended.

In Queensland, prescribing pharmacists can assess your risk, make recommendations and where appropriate, prescribe medication to have in your first aid kit for early treatment of travellers’ diarrhoea.

Altitude illness

Altitude illness refers to symptoms caused by reduced oxygen and changes in air pressure found in high-altitude locations. The best prevention for altitude illness is gradual ascent. However, preventative medication may be advised if the risk is significant and/or unavoidable.

In Queensland, prescribing pharmacists can assess your risk, make recommendations and where appropriate, prescribe medication to have on standby in your first aid kit for treatment of nausea and vomiting and initial management of altitude illness.
