Are you up to date? 2023 recommendations for Flu & COVID-19 vaccination.

By Carolyn Clementson, B. Pharm

Are you up to date? It’s hard to keep up with the advice so we’ll provide a handy summary.

The flu (or influenza) is a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract that can cause severe illness and life-threatening complications. It can affect people of all ages.

The best protection against influenza is annual vaccination, with annual flu vaccination recommended for everyone over 6 months of age1.

We know that the best protection against becoming severely unwell or hospitalised with a COVID-19 infection is to ensure your vaccination status is up to date.

It is recommended that all adults over 65 years receive a 2023 COVID-19 vaccine booster, if their last COVID-19 vaccine dose or confirmed infection was at least 6 months ago. This also applies to adults over 18 years who have health conditions that contribute to an increased risk of severe COVID-19 disease.

It is also recommended that adults between 18 and 64 years, without an increased risk of severe COVID-19 disease, consider receiving a 2023 COVID-19 vaccine booster, if their last COVID-19 vaccine dose or confirmed infection was at least 6 months ago. This also applies to children between 5 and 17 years who have health conditions that contribute to an increased risk of severe COVID-19 disease.

No booster doses are currently recommended for children under 18 years who do not have any risk factors for severe COVID-19 disease.

If you are eligible to receive your booster dose and are yet to do so, it is a good idea to book your appointment as soon as possible to ensure you are protected this winter.

Up-to-date vaccination against both viruses is your best protection this winter! To make things easier, you can safely receive your COVID-19 booster and your flu vaccination at the same time.
