Why do some prescription items have four prices?

Items which are subsidised by the Government under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) are charged at different prices depending on the type of benefit card a customer may hold. Below outlines the different requirements per price to help you determine which option to select.

PBS

  • You hold a valid Medicare card
  • No pension, health care card, DVA health card or safety net card held
  • The medicine is listed as a subsidised medicine by Medicare Australia
  • The amount you pay will contribute towards your medicines safety net

Concession

  • You hold a valid Medicare card
  • You hold a valid pension health care card, DVA health card or safety net concession card
  • The medicine is listed as a subsidised medicine by Medicare Australia
  • The amount you pay will contribute towards your medicines safety net

Safety Net

  • You hold a valid Medicare card
  • You hold a valid safety net entitlement card
  • The medicine is listed as a subsidised medicine by Medicare Australia
  • The amount you pay will contribute towards your medicines safety net

Private

  • You hold a valid and legal Australian prescription
  • The medicine is not listed as a PBS subsidised medicine by Medicare Australia; and/or
  • You do not hold an Australian Medicare card
  • The amount you pay for private prescriptions will not contribute towards your medicines safety net

Why am I being asked more questions when purchasing a Pharmacy or Pharmacist Only Medicine?

To determine that over the counter medicines are safe and appropriate for you, our pharmacists need to assess your health status and therefore require you to complete all requested medical information when ordering medicines. At Good Price Pharmacy Warehouse, our mission is to provide you with the best possible health solutions at everyday low prices. Our pharmacists aim to provide the highest level of patient care and ethical practice so in order to do this we may ask you questions relating to your health.

What type of patient am I and which price do I choose for a prescription item?

PBS
If you have a valid Medicare card but not a pension or health care card you are considered to be a general patient and entitled to PBS pricing. PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme) pricing indicates that the medicine is listed as a subsidised medicine by Medicare Australia. If the cost of the medicine exceeds the listed maximum price to patient the cost of your medicine will be subsidised by Medicare. The amount you pay will contribute towards your medicines safety net.

Concession
If you have a valid Medicare card and a pension, health care card, DVA health card or concessional safety net card you are considered to be a concessional patient and entitled to concession pricing. This pricing applies to PBS medicines, listed as a subsidised medicine by Medicare Australia. The cost of your medicine is subsidised by Medicare. The amount you pay will contribute towards your medicines safety net.

Safety Net
If you have a valid Medicare card and an entitlement safety net card you are considered to be an entitlement patient and entitled to safety net pricing. This pricing applies to PBS medicines listed as a subsidised medicine by Medicare Australia. The cost of your medicine is subsidised by Medicare.

Private
If you have a valid and legal Australian prescription private pricing will apply if the medicine is not listed as a PBS subsidised medicine by Medicare Australia and/or you do not hold an Australian Medicare card. The amount you pay for private prescriptions will not contribute towards your medicines safety net.

If you are unsure of which option to select please call your local store and we will assist you.

What is the Safety Net?

The PBS safety net protects patients and families requiring a large number of PBS subsidised medicines. Your family includes you, your spouse and children under the age of 16 who are in your care and control and/or dependent full-time students under the age of 25. If you reach the Safety Net threshold within a calendar year, you will qualify to receive PBS medicines at a reduced price or free of charge for the remainder of that year. You will be issued with a safety net concessional or entitlement card.

What are generics?

Generic medicines contain the same active ingredient in the same strength as the original brand of medicine. Generic medicines are rigorously tested to prove they have the same effect on the body as the original brand of medicine. In many cases, generic medicines will be more affordable for you.

How do I know if I have an Authority Prescription?

Some PBS subsidised medications are restricted and only subsidised under specific circumstances. These prescriptions require approval from Medicare Australia in order to receive a subsidised rate. These prescriptions are flagged as authority required. An approved authority prescription will have on authority prescription number and a valid approval number. To determine if you have an Authority Prescription click here.

I'm going overseas and need enough medication to last the duration of my trip; can you supply multiple packs or multiple repeats?

Pharmacists are medicines experts and responsible for ensuring that medicines use is safe and appropriate. Pharmacists are also required to meet all applicable legal and professional obligations. Multiple packs may only be legally and safely supplied to a patient, under doctor's instructions. The prescription must be endorsed by the doctor to allow the dispensing of multiple repeats or written for multiple pocks where the doctor deems appropriate.

If your doctor hasn't authorised your prescription for multiple packs we will not be able to dispense a larger quantity than the prescription states.

Can I order multiple Pharmacy Only Medicines?

In store Pharmacy Only Medicines are kept in the Professional Service Area which is in view of the Pharmacist. Online there is no pharmacist present during the transaction; therefore we can only supply a limit of 1 per order. This is in accordance with the Pharmacy Board of Australia.
