Up to date? Vaccinate! Protect yourself this Winter

We know that the best protection against becoming severely unwell with a COVID-19 infection is to ensure your vaccination status is up to date.

Current advice is that all individuals aged 16 years and over are recommended to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster dose to maintain an “up-to-date” status. This booster dose is recommended from 3 months after the last primary dose. If you are eligible to receive your booster dose and are yet to do so, it is a good idea to book your appointment as soon as possible to ensure you are protected this winter.

To provide further protection to those who are at greatest risk of severe illness from COVID-19, an additional booster dose, or winter dose, of COVID-19 vaccine is now recommended. The winter dose is available for adults aged 65 years and older, residents of aged care or disability care facilities, people aged 16 years and older with severe immunocompromise and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and older. The winter dose can be given from 4 months after your first booster and appointments are available now.

The flu (or influenza) is a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract that can cause severe illness and life-threatening complications. It can affect people of all ages.  Annual flu vaccination is recommended for everyone over 6 months of age and is the most effective means of preventing an infection.

Whilst we have seen lower levels of flu in Australia over the past two years, we have also seen a reduced uptake of flu vaccination. Lower vaccine coverage coupled with less exposure to the virus, may increase the risks associated with flu infection this year.

Up to date vaccination against both viruses is your best protection this winter! To make things easier, you can now safely receive your COVID-19 booster or winter dose and your flu vaccinations at the same time.
