Heart Health

Seven in ten adult Australians have at least one risk factor for stroke, heart or blood vessel disease and heart disease is the single biggest killer of Australians. The good news is that heart disease can mostly be prevented.

Being diagnosed with a heart condition can be frightening but there's a lot you can do to help improve your heart health.

Blood Pressure is the pressure of your blood on the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps and it isn't usually something you can feel. If it's too high, it needs to be managed. High blood pressure over a long time is one of the main risk factors for heart disease.

Medicines

Many people require medicines to help control high blood pressure. To ensure the best health outcomes, it is important to take your medicine regularly. Our prescriptions reminder service may be of assistance to you.

Monitoring blood pressure at home is a good way to understand how well controlled your blood pressure is.  Our pharmacists can measure your blood pressure during a private consultation and provide advice on how to improve your heart health.

Cholesterol is a fatty substance carried in your blood. Your body needs cholesterol to be healthy but an imbalance of cholesterol can lead to heart attack or stroke. The body produces most cholesterol naturally and it is found in some foods. Healthy food choices can help but for many people, medicine is needed to help lower unhealthy cholesterol.

Medications that treat high cholesterol can deplete levels of coenzyme Q10 in the body. CoQ10 is important for overall heart health. Supplmenetation of CoQ10 may be recommended.

Soluble fibre has also been shown to lower unhealthy cholesterol and woks by preventing the absorption of cholesterol from the intestine.

People who wish to know more about their medicines may be eligible to receive a funded medicines review (MedsCheck) with our pharmacists.

Management

People who consume a diet high in fish tend to have lower risk of heart disease and stroke. Supplmenets of marine-sourced somega-3s, like fish oil, may be beneficial for people who do not eat fish.

Smokers are more likely to suffer for heart disease. Smoking affects the vessels that supply blood to the heart and other body parts. Stopping smoking is recommended to improve heart health.

Having a healthy body weight lowers your risk of heart problems and can help lower your blood pressure and cholesterol. Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the risk of heart disease and other health problems.

Healthy eating for your heart includes:
